Small Hive is a film, video and animation production company founded by Alex Taylor and Tracy King.
Alex Taylor
Alex Taylor is a filmmaker, researcher and journalist.
He has worked across many feature-length and short film projects which have been nominated for the ‘BFF Bull Award’, ‘Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Award’, and selected for Lift-Off Global Network Sessions and Stockport Garrick Short Film Festival, also winning ‘Best Original Screenplay’, ‘Best Picture (International)’ at Skiptown Playhouse International Film Festival, ‘Best Micro-Short’ at Birmingham Film Festival and the ‘Sony Future Filmmaker 2026 Award’ (fiction category). Alex worked on BBC series Doctors, has collaborated with national organisations, was in consideration for The Pitch Film Fund’s £50,000 award, and worked with RareTV on developing several successful factual pitches for National Geographic and Disney+.
As a journalist, he writes for UnHerd, Mill Media, The Dispatch, The Fence, and has worked with The Sunday Times and The Telegraph as a cultural commentator. His article for The Fence about being a former eulogy writer gained viral attention in 2025 and was syndicated by Longreads. Alex worked as a researcher for publishers including Penguin Random House and HarperCollins. His media appearances include BBC Radio WM, Newsnight, The One Show, MKFM, Massive Hits Radio and The Gadget Show.Alex has a masters degree in Film and Television: Research and Production.
Tracy King
Tracy King is a producer, writer, and narrative non-fiction book author.
She is best known for her short animations, including the viral smash hit BAFTA-longlisted Tim Minchin's Storm, and It’s Not Rocket Science with astronaut and former Commander of the ISS Chris Hadfield. Her music video credits include the award-winning WHY? for Canadian rock legend Devin Townsend, and her live event video production credits include major speakers like Prof Brian Cox, Stephen Fry, Alan Moore, Jon Ronson, Adam Kay and James Randi. She has written and produced for organisations including Imperial College, and wrote and co-produced episodes of the popular Pearson Education podcast Nevertheless, aimed at women and girls in STEM.
Tracy co-founded and produced the science channel Quirkology with psychologist Richard Wiseman, including short films with over 550 million views. She is the inaugural Writer in Residence at the Royal Institution, writing and producing multiple works of print and video for publication, working with the BBC to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Christmas Lectures. As a writer she has been published in media including The Times, New Statesman, Guardian, Stylist, Nature, Unherd, the Telegraph, and The New European. Her media appearances include BBC Radio 4, BBC Sounds, National Geographic Channel, Good Morning Britain, and Newsnight. For fifteen years she was a columnist for Custom PC Magazine.
Her non-fiction books include Learning To Think (Penguin, 2024) and The Cost of Trust (Harper Collins, 2026), and she is a contributing essayist to Writing the Real (Dead Ink, 2026). She co-wrote and produced a bestselling graphic novel (Orion, 2014) adapted from her viral animation Storm with Tim Minchin, described by Jonathan Ross as, “probably the greatest and most important thing ever published in the history of humankind to date and in the future. And it’s very funny”. She has spoken at events including Cheltenham Literature Festival, The Women’s Prize, Bath Festival, New Scientist Live, Guernsey Literary Festival, Wilderness, Oxford Literary Festival and Stratford Literary Festival.
